Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: ‘Shire: Aberdeenshire. Place: Mintlaw. Building: Aden Stables’. Photographer: ‘C.H.C’ Date: ‘June 1963’ Tower, Round Square, Aden House, Aberdeenshire From the 1750s to 1937 the Russell family built up the estate of Aden to a 4,000 hectare mix of private policies, farmland and woodland. Since 1980, 92 hectares of the estate has been managed by the local council as a country park and the stables, which date from 1800, have been renovated and turned into a museum of agriculture. The central tower in the curved block is seen here in 1963 in very poor condition. The square tower is four-storeyed with Venetian windows at the first and second floor and tripartite lunettes (semicircular windows) at the third floor. The roof is a truncated pyramid surmounted by an open cupola with dome sitting on Roman Doric columns. Aberdeenshire County Council purchased the estate in 1974, but it is now managed by Aberdeenshire Council. What was the 'North-East of Scotland Heritage Centre' is now the 'Aberdeenshire Farming Museum' and features an exhibition entitled 'Weel Vrocht Grun' ('we'll work the ground' in Doric, the local dialect).
