Scope and Content Victoria Bridge, Glasgow This bridge was built on the site of the old Glasgow Bridge, a wooden structure in the 13th century, renewed in stone in about 1400. This bridge was widened in cast iron by Thomas Telford, but was clearly inadequate by the 1840s, and was replaced by this bridge in 1851-4, designed by James Walker, engineer. This shows the bridge from the north-west. The elegance of the design is evident. The external masonry is all Irish granite from Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire). The chimney was that of Adelphi Distillery, and on the right is the stern of the sailing vessel 'Carrick', then a floating club-house. This is now the oldest bridge over the River Clyde in Glasgow, and the only one founded on wooden piles. It still carries main road traffic into the city, though the opening of the M8 urban motorway and the Kingston Bridge in 1970 has reduced pressure on all the other city centre bridges.
