Scope and Content Horse lorry, Stobcross Street, Glasgow This lorry belonged to James Buchanan & Co Ltd, proprietors of 'Black & White' Scotch whisky. Since 1925, Buchanans had been part of the Distillers' Co Ltd. It is loaded with hogsheads from Lowries' cooperage in Hydepark Street, also part of the DCL empire. This shows the lorry proceeding west along Stobcross Street towards Queen's Dock, where the hogsheads will probably be shipped coastwise to one of the west coast distilleries. Note that the vehicle has the traditional steel tyres. Buchanans were the last users of full-sized horse lorries in Glasgow, and retained them, in part, as advertisement. They were always, as here, immaculately turned out. W P Lowrie & Co Ltd acted as blenders and bottlers for Buchanans, as well as coopers and vat builders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
