Scope and Content Jetty, Bonawe Iron Works, Argyll & Bute This iron-smelting works was founded in 1752 by the partners in the Newland Furnace Co, near Ulverston, Lancashire, acting here as the Lorn Furnace Co. It was built to use charcoal made from local woodland as a fuel, ore being brought in ships from Lancashire, which returned with iron. This shows the pier on Loch Etive which was built by the firm to handle imports of iron ore, charcoal and limestone, and exports of iron. It was also used by passengers and mail for the works. It has for many years been known as Kelly's Pier. The works operated until the early 1870s, and was then abandoned. This pier was probably used by coastal shipping at least until the railway reached Taynuilt in 1880. It is still in light use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
