Scope and Content Workers' Housing, Bonawe Iron Works, Argyll & Bute This iron-smelting works was founded in 1752 by the partners in the Newland Furnace Co, near Ulverston, Lancashire, acting here as the Lorn Furnace Co. It was built to use charcoal made from local woodland as a fuel, ore being brought in ships from Lancashire, which returned with iron. This shows the larger block of workers' houses built by the firm. It is on an L-plan, and is flatted, with entry to the flats on the upper level by external stairs, one of which can be seen on the right. Some of the houses were still inhabited in 1965. The works operated until the early 1870s, and was then abandoned. These houses remained in use. In about 1960 a fire partially destroyed the complex, and the corner block was later rebuilt with taller walls. Much of the remainder has fallen into ruin. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
