Scope and Content Netherplace Bleach Works, Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire This was one of a number of linen bleaching works set up in east Renfrewshire in the late 18th century to serve the linen industry of the area. These works usually survived the transition from linen to cotton, and from croft to chemical bleaching. This shows the works from the west, looking across the reservoir which stores water from the Capelrig Burn for use in the works. The buildings had been much altered over the years, but the block on the left may have been of 18th-century date. In 1965, this works had its own power station, with steam engines whose exhaust steam was used in the works for heating. The chimney in this view served the boiler house. The works, much altered, is now the Scottish headquarters of Coats-Viyella. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
