Scope and Content Lochleven Castle, Perth & Kinross, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in the early 20th century, shows the tower-house, with parts of the barmkin on either side. The entrance to the courtyard is to the left. Note that the entrance to the tower is by an external stair, and that the wall-heads are turfed. The external stair has since been removed. When Sir William Bruce built Kinross House in 1679 he aligned its axis to make this castle the focal point of the view from the garden front of the house. The island on which the castle sits was increased in size in the 1820s, when the level of the loch was reduced in the interests of land reclamation. Lochleven Castle has its origins in a tower-house of c.1400. A barmkin (walled enclosure) was added in the later 15th century, and it was modified in the 16th century for the Regent Morton. It is notorious for its use as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots in 1567-8, and by her escape with the aid of a page-boy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
