Description View of partly demolished end gable from West.

Date 3/1989

Catalogue Number B 14080

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 682574

Scope and Content View from west of part-demolished end gable on corner of Hilltown and Victoria Road, Dundee These five-storeyed tenements at 1 Hilltown were designed by architects McCulloch & Fairlie in the 19th-century. They were demolished in 1989. This suite is now occupied by modern flats, and a theatre called 'The Little Theatre'. This photograph shows a 19th-century tenement block in the process of being demolished. Each flat is indicated by the fireplaces and presses left in the walls. The number of fireplaces is a reminder of how residents relied on coal for heating and cooking. Hilltown is an area around the ancient north route out of Dundee. A large number of tenements were erected here in the 19th-century, and the poor living conditions of residents led to many criticisms from housing reformers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
