Scope and Content Perth Waterworks, Tay Street, Perth, Perth & Kinross The original works on this site was built in 1832 to designs by Adam Anderson, architect and engineer. It contained a steam pump and boiler to pump water from a well beside the River Tay into a large cast-iron cistern, from which pipes carried it round the city. This shows the works from the south-east, with part of an early 20th-century extension on the left, and the original works behind, with its cast iron cistern and ornamented chimney. The extension housed a steam pumping engine by Douglas & Grant of Kirkcaldy. In 1973 the old works was restored and converted into a visitor centre. This involved the demolition of this engine and its extension. The building was again converted, this time into an art gallery, in 1992. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
