Scope and Content Bauxite mine, Sevenacres, North Ayrshire The fireclay industries of north Ayrshire were extensive and varied until the 1980s. Unlike the Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire industries, however, refractory bricks were a comparatively small proportion of the total output. The leading producer of refractories latterly was the Douglas Fireclay Co of Dalry. This shows the entrance to the mine, on the left, and the loading platform. The chutes for discharging clay into road vehicles are on the far side of the platform. The office for the mine is on the far right. This mine produced clay with a high content of aluminium oxide, which was used to make high-alumina refractories, which could resist high temperatures. The mine was probably operated by the Douglas company. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
