Scope and Content Bauxite mine, Sevenacres, North Ayrshire The fireclay industries of north Ayrshire were extensive and varied until the 1980s. Unlike the Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire industries, however, refractory bricks were a comparatively small proportion of the total output. The leading producer of refractories latterly was the Douglas Fireclay Co of Dalry. This shows two of the hutches (small wagons) used to bring fireclay out of the mine, which had recently closed when this photograph was taken. These were attached to a cable and pulled out of the mine by a winch on the loading platform. This mine produced clay with a high content of aluminium oxide, which was used to make high-alumina refractories, which could resist high temperatures. The mine was probably operated by the Douglas company. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
