Scope and Content Gorbals Shoe Factory, Nos 26-36 Oxford Street, Glasgow The first buildings on this site were constructed in about 1865 and in 1874 for E & S Scott, wholesale and retail shoe manufacturers. These were replaced in 1890-1 for E J Scott & Co Ltd by a large four-storeyed plus attic factory and warehouse block designed by T Dykes, architect. This shows the 1890-1 building from the south-west. The mansard roof was part of the original design, making the attic into another floor. The chimney in the centre belonged to the complex. Note the unusual pattern for windows in the frontage. This was the largest shoe factory building in Glasgow surviving into the 1960s. The firm had a chain of shops in the city, and used these premises for warehousing, as well as for manufacturing. The building was occupied in 1965 by Telephone Rentals Ltd, but it was demolished c.1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
