Scope and Content St Leonard's Station, St Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh This station was built as the Edinburgh terminus of the Edinburgh & Dalkeith Railway, the first public railway in south-east Scotland, which opened in 1831. It was originally horse-worked, but was converted to locomotive haulage by the North British Railway in 1847. This shows the warehouse at the terminus, which had two rail tracks running its full length. It was probably designed for the storage of grain brought from Dalkeith, which was an important centre of the grain trade, but may also have served as a carriage shed. The branch from Duddingston to St Leonard's was closed an 1968, and the track lifted soon after. This warehouse has survived, and has been converted into a community centre, misleadingly named 'The Engine Shed'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
