Scope and Content Lock and bridge, East Old Dock, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland was greatly enhanced by the construction in 1800-6 of the first of a pair of large wet docks designed by John Rennie. A second followed, to the west, in 1811-17. This shows the north-east gate of the entrance lock at the east end of the East Dock, opened in 1806, with the two-leaf swing bridge which spans it beyond. Both gate and bridge were installed in 1842-4 by James Leslie as replacements for John Rennie's originals. The East and West Docks were filled in in the late 1960s, but this lock and bridge survived, and are now scheduled ancient monuments. A bar and restaurant have been established on the south side of the lock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
