Scope and Content Warehouse, offices and houses, Nos 9-11 Dock Place, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland was greatly enhanced by the construction in 1800-6 of the first of a pair of large wet docks designed by John Rennie. A second followed, to the west, in 1811-17. This shows a block built across the east end of the East Dock to designs by John Paterson, resident engineer of the docks, in about 1810. The East Dock had opened in 1806. The ends of this block contained flats, the middle section was in use as warehousing, and the ground-floor contained offices. The East and West Docks were filled in in the late 1960s, but the surrounding buildings survived. This block was renovated in the late 1980s, with housing on the upper floors and offices and a restaurant on the ground floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
