Scope and Content Fison's Warehouse, Nos 39-41 Timber Bush, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland in the 19th century resulted in the construction of a large number of warehouses. Many of them were bonded for the storage of wines and spirits. Some were also used for blending and bottling for retail sale. This shows a range of warehouses in Timber Bush, an area used as a timber store and market until it was developed as a warehouse area in the mid-19th century. The oriel windows look along a lane to Bernard Street, a principal thoroughfare, hence these display features. Much of Timber Bush was cleared in the 1980s, in the regeneration of Leith, and has been redeveloped. The dense warehouse developments necessitated by the use of horse haulage has since been superseded by single-storeyed storage in industrial estates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
