Scope and Content Knitting machines, Elder & Watson's Hosiery Works, Dunlop Street, Strathaven, South Lanarkshire This small hosiery works was built in 1887 to use recently-invented knitting machinery. It remained an isolated works of its kind, but survived competition from larger concerns until the 1970s. This shows a pair of knitting machines making golf stockings. Note that the machine operator is sitting on an old-fashioned wooden stool, which was probably part of the original furnishings of the works. This works made a range of knitted goods, latterly including ladies' sweaters, but one of its specialised products was golf stockings, knitted from thick wool, with turned-down tops, to be worn with plus fours. Changing fashions put an end to the demand for these durable garments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
