Scope and Content Buckholm Mill, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This was the last large water-driven textile mill in Galashiels, built from 1846 for Henry Sanderson. It was built beside the Gala Water, with a tunnel connecting the weir on the river to the waterwheel in the basement of the mill. This shows the main range from the north-west. The layout of the mill was fairly typical of Borders woollen mills, three bays wide, with small-paned glazing. This one was unusual in being five storeys high, a consequence of the cramped riverside site, necessary for the use of water power. The mill was lit by electricity in 1884, at a time when mills were generally lit by gas. It was in multiple occupation in 1968, with at least four firms using it. The complex has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
