Scope and Content London Shrinking Works, Station Brae, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This works was named for its function: shrinking tweed destined for the London market. Tweed cloth as woven contained 'size', and woollen cloth tends to shrink when washed. This works washed newly-woven tweeds in a controlled manner, and dried them to the required width. This shows part of the works, looking across the platforms of Galashiels station. The wooden gangway on the left led to the other section of the works, which was lower and longer. The footbridge on the right was part of the station. This works belonged to J Gladstone & Co Ltd, London shrinkers and export packers. The works has now closed and been converted to other uses. Tweed manufacture in the Borders is now almost extinct. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
