Scope and Content Galashiels Railway Station, Station Brae, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This was built as a through station on the Hawick branch of the North British Railway, which opened in 1850. It later became a junction for a branch line to Peebles. As the largest community on the Hawick route, the town merited a large and imposing station building. This shows the building from the south-west. It is in the Tudor style favoured at the time by the North British Railway, although the arcaded porch was unique on the North British Railway when it was built. The building included a house for the stationmaster on the upper floor. Galashiels station closed, along with the rest of the line to Carlisle via Hawick (known as the Waverley Route), in 1968. The route of the railway, including this station, was then cleared and a relief road formed along it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
