Scope and Content Netherdale Mill, Dale Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This works was built from 1857 for Cochrane & Co. By 1893 there were two large spinning mills, and a substantial block of weaving sheds, all steam driven. This was the largest of the Galashiels mills. This shows the older of the two spinning mills, completed in 1857. The glazing pattern of the windows is typical of other Galashiels mills of the period. The castellated stair-tower is a flourish not found in any other Scottish textile mill. In 1968, when this photograph was taken, this mill was occupied in part by the Borders Textile College, the biggest of the textile colleges in Scotland, and now the only one. Only the 1873 spinning mill survives in 2002. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
