Bo'ness, Kinneil Colliery View showing N.C.B. East Fife Area no.47

SC 613000

Description Bo'ness, Kinneil Colliery View showing N.C.B. East Fife Area no.47

Date 4/4/1969

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 613000

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Locomotive, Kinneil Colliery, Bo'ness, Falkirk This colliery was originally sunk in the 1880s by the Kinneil Cannel & Coking Coal Co. The National Coal Board completely rebuilt the colliery from 1951 as a showpiece pit. Its workings extended under the River Forth, and eventually linked with those of Valleyfield Colliery on the Fife side of the river. This shows one of the shunting locomotives employed at the colliery to move wagons into position for loading and for disposal of waste. This one was built in 1943 by Andrew Barclay & Sons Ltd, Kilmarnock, and was, unusually, oil-fired. Kinneil Colliery was closed in 1982, and abandoned in 1983. The upcast shaft headgear and fan were saved from the clearance of the pit-head, but have since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
