Scope and Content Viaduct, Dulnain Bridge, Highland This viaduct was part of the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway, whose line from Forres to Dunkeld, opened in 1863, by linking existing railways, gave Inverness its first reasonably direct route to the south. This shows the viaduct from the south-west. It was designed by Joseph Mitchell, and the iron span was probably made by Sir William Fairbairn & Co in Manchester. The castellated abutments are similar to those of other iron girder bridges on this railway. The route via Grantown lost much of its importance in 1897, when a more direct route from Inverness to Aviemore was opened. The Forres-Aviemore line closed in 1965. The ironwork of this viaduct has been removed, but the abutments survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
