Scope and Content Aerated Water Factory, Nos 23-7 Oxford Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1885 for Barclay Brothers, bottlers. The factory was on the ground floor of the building, which extended beyond the back of the four-storeyed front block. Stables were also provided, and there were six flats on the upper floors, presumably for employees. This shows the Oxford Street frontage of the factory from the north-east. The entrance to the factory was through the pedimented doorway, while the flats were accessed via the close to the right. In 1968 the building was being used as a Muslim mission. The bottling of aerated waters became a significant industry in the late 19th century, partly because of the rise of the Temperance Movement. This was one of the smaller works, and succumbed to competition from larger producers. The building was demolished in the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
