Scope and Content St Crispin Works, Nos 57-9 Cornwall Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1895 for Melvin Brothers, wholesale and export boot and shoe manufacturers, and leather merchants. The name refers to the patron saint of shoemakers, St Crispin. The premises had a brief life as a leather works, being converted into the Glasgow Syrup Refinery in 1903. This shows the works from the west. The use of sandstone, and the Classical detailing harmonises with the adjoining tenements. Note the extensive glazing, needed for its original use as a boot and shoe factory. The premises were in 1967 used by British Paints Ltd, paint and varnish manufacturers. Judging by the cast-iron lettering on the fascia, they had been there for some time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
