Scope and Content Methil Docks, Methil, Fife This very large dock system was built for the shipment of coal from pits belonging to the Wemyss family. The first dock was completed in 1887, and a second, outer dock was added in 1894-1900. The third and largest dock was built in 1908-13. This shows the west side of the third dock, which was designed by Blyth & Blyth of Edinburgh. This dock was reached from the sea by a long channel beside the earlier docks, and protected by a breakwater. The entrance to the dock is just above the stern of the tug in this view. The tug was used to assist vessels using the docks. The dock was used for coal shipment until 1970, but for many years the quantities shipped were small. In its heyday the port shipped more than 3 million tons of coal a year. The dock is still used by small coasters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
