Description East Wemyss, Station Road, Railway Station View from WNW showing NW and SW fronts

Date 29/10/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 610170

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content East Wemyss Station, Station Road, East Wemyss, Fife This station, opened in 1881, was on the branch from Thornton Junction to Methil, which was completed as far as Buckhaven in 1881 and to Methil in 1884, in advance of the completion of the first dock at Methil, in 1888. This shows the platform building on the west-bound platform, after it had been converted into a house. The line had closed to passengers in 1955. The removal of passenger services from short branch-lines was characteristic of the 1950s, when improved bus services, and the growth of private motoring seriously affected traffic.
