Scope and Content Scottish Floorcloth Works, Nether Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife This works was founded in 1847 by Michael Nairn originally to make floorcloth by coating canvas with layers of paint. When the patent for linoleum expired in the 1870s, this works was adapted to make the new product, and was later greatly extended. This shows the works from the south-east, with its tall buildings cascading down the hill from Nether Street. To the left are the maltings of Robert Hutchison & Co Ltd. Nairns amalgamated in 1962 with Williamsons of Lancaster in 1962, and this works was closed soon after. It was demolished in 1969, with some difficulty, as it was partly built of reinforced concrete, and the site landscaped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
