Scope and Content Kirkcaldy Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy Harbour was an early one, but was rearranged in 1843, and completely rebuilt in 1909, most of the 1909 works being in mass concrete. The harbour now has an inner basin, with a single pair of gates to maintain deep water at low tide, and an outer basin protected by breakwater piers. This shows one of the grain wagons used for internal traffic in the harbour area. These wagons had top doors, for loading, and bottom doors, for unloading. This one belonged to Robert Hutchison & Co Ltd, who owned flour mills and maltings close to the harbour. The harbour remained in use for small coasters until the 1980s. It is now virtually disused, and the quay sides are being developed for housing. The main trade latterly was in barley for the large maltings to the east of the harbour.
