Scope and Content Kirkcaldy Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy Harbour was an early one, but was rearranged in 1843, and completely rebuilt in 1909, most of the 1909 works being in mass concrete. The harbour now has an inner basin, with a single pair of gates to maintain deep water at low tide, and an outer basin protected by breakwater piers. This shows the west side of the inner basin with a small coaster, typical of the vessels using the harbour in the late 20th century. The buildings behind the ship are of various dates from the 17th to the 19th centuries. On the right is part of St Mary's Canvas Works, which made canvas backing for linoleum. The harbour remained in use for small coasters until the 1980s. It is now virtually disused, and the quay sides are being developed for housing. The main trade latterly was in barley for the large maltings to the east of the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
