Scope and Content Kirkcaldy Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy Harbour was an early one, but was rearranged in 1843, and completely rebuilt in 1909, most of the 1909 works being in mass concrete. The harbour now has an inner basin, with a single pair of gates to maintain deep water at low tide, and an outer basin protected by breakwater piers. This shows part of the central pier, with a small mobile hand crane, light enough to be used on the timber extension on the right. In the background is part of the East Pier, extended in 1909, on which ran a railway track. This crane was a good example of the type of hand crane made in large numbers in the mid- and late 19th century, and capable of lifting one or two tons. It was disused but intact in 1967, but was removed soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
