Scope and Content Netherplace Bleachworks, Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire This was the last of the many rural textile finishing works established in east Renfrewshire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1968 it belonged to Wallace & Co (Netherplace) Ltd, and was engaged in 'customer' finishing of fabrics from a wide range of sources. This shows part of the works' power station. These were the two smallest generating sets, with Belliss & Morcom engines and Rees Rototurbo generators. The vertical pipes take high-pressure steam to the engines, with the curved pipes taking exhaust steam to other parts of the works. This power station was dismantled in 1970. One of the engines was preserved, and is now in a museum in Dalmellington in Ayrshire. The works no longer bleaches, but is the Scottish base for Coats Viyella. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
