Scope and Content Reed and Heddle Factory, Nos 105-11 John Street, Glasgow This building was constructed in 1866-7 for James Neilson & Son, reed makers. The John Street frontage was of sandstone ashlar, but the elevations to Love Loan and Margaret Street were built of red and white brick. This shows the building from the west, looking along Love Loan. Note the striking use of red and white brick, especially in the construction of the chimney, which was designed to resemble a stylised lotus flower, an Egyptian architectural motif. Reeds and heddles are components of looms. Heddles are frames with loops through which individual warp (longitudinal) threads are passed. By raising and lowering two or more heddles a 'shed' is formed through which a shuttle is passed to form a cross thread in the cloth. Reeds close up the weave. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
