Scope and Content Harland & Wolff's Govan Shipyard, Clydebrae Street, Glasgow This yard was created in 1912 out of three smaller yards by Harland & Wolff Ltd of Belfast, as part of their strategy for continuity in the event of Irish independence. When completed, it was the most up-to-date yard on the River Clyde. This shows the fitting-out basin built to serve the yard, with two dredgers built for Russia in the Linthouse yard of Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd, and another vessel, probably under repair. By that time Stephens were using the basin for ship repair, to complement the Govan Graving Docks. Harland & Wolff closed the Govan yard in 1962. Stephens became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968, and these dredgers were the last vessels built by the company before the amalgamation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
