Scope and Content Alloa Glass Works, Glasshouse Loan, Alloa, Clackmannan This works was founded in 1750 to make glass bottles. It had a chequered history in its early days, and for a time abandoned bottle making for the manufacture of window glass. It was probably originally engaged in making bottles for the export of beer. This shows a glass bottle making machine at the base of one of a pair of glass cones, built in about 1825, in the works. The furnace supplying glass to the machine is behind the arch, in the cone itself. This works has for many years belonged to United Glass, originally a subsidiary of The Distillers' Co Ltd, and now of United Distillers & Vintners. It was greatly enlarged in the 1970s, and is now Scotland's only glass bottle works. The cone disused in 1968 has been demolished, but this one has been preserved.
