Scope and Content Part of river frontage of Clydebank Shipbuilding Yard, Kilbowie, Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire This shipbuilding yard was built in 1870 by J & G Thomson to replace a yard in Govan, whose site was required for harbour improvement. It was extended and rebuilt on many occasions, most notably between 1890 and 1914, and again in the late 1950s. This shows part of the river frontage of the yard, with the entrance to Rothesay Dock on the right. The vessel on the building berth is the 'Queen Elizabeth II', and the dredger on the left is preparing a channel for the launch of the vessel. This yard built the largest classes of ocean liners and warships, including the 'Queen Mary' and 'Queen Elizabeth'. From 1899 to 1968 the yard was owned by John Brown & Co of Sheffield. It became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968 and stopped building ships in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
