Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, No 739 South Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1913 by Barclay, Curle & Co Ltd, owners of the adjacent Clydeholm Shipyard, to build marine diesel engines under licence from Burmeister & Wain of Copenhagen. It was the first purpose-built marine diesel engine works in the world. This shows the works from the south-east. The design was a German one, and the building has a steel frame of considerable complexity with brick cladding, as can be seen here. Note the stockyard crane to the right. The firm lost the Burmeister & Wain license to Harland & Wolff, who built engines at Belfast and on the River Clyde at Finnieston. This works built diesel engines of other designs until the late 1970s, but is now in marginal use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
