Scope and Content Gargiston Brick and Tile Works, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire This small tile works was founded in about 1889, probably largely to make tile field drains, which were much in demand in Ayrshire, where there are heavy clay soils and a high rainfall. It was a small works, with only one kiln. This shows the works from the east, with the rectangular updraught kiln in the middle. The kiln is full of pipes to be fired, and the charging door is being bricked up. In the background are the sheds used for drying the clay tiles before firing. On the right is a stack of fired tiles. The works continued in operation until the early 1970s, and then lay derelict for a time before demolition. It was one of the last works to use an updraught kiln, an inefficient device producing a lot of smoke, but otherwise very suitable for firing tiles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
