Scope and Content Quilt Factory, No 210 Ballater Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1889-90 for Thomas Nicol, to designs by Richard Murray, engineer, to replace workshops in Cochrane Street and in the Calton. In this factory the covers for quilts were woven, the down sterilised, and the finished quilts sewn using sewing machines. This shows the works from the south-east. The four-storeyed and attic range housed the offices, the sterilising apparatus, and the making-up and warehouse departments. The single-storeyed weaving sheds on the left were used for weaving the quilt covers, and tablecloths. Before duvets were introduced, quilts were used, over bedspreads, blankets and sheets, in making up beds, They were, like some duvets, filled with feathers, usually from ducks. In 1967 this factory was used for knitwear manufacture, but has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
