Scope and Content Signal Box, Duddingston Station, Duddingston Road West, Edinburgh This signal box, unusually small, controlled the access to the goods-only line to St Leonards, part of the pioneering Edinburgh & Dalkeith Railway, from the Edinburgh, Suburban & Southside Junction Railway. The latter opened in 1884, and the box probably also dated from that year. This shows the box from the south-east. The railway line on the right is the St Leonards branch, which crossed Duddingston Road West on the level. The footbridge was provided for use when the crossing was shut to road traffic. The St Leonards branch was closed in 1968, and the signal box and footbridge were demolished. The Edinburgh & Dalkeith Railway opened in 1831, the first public railway in the Edinburgh area, and was originally horse-worked. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
