Scope and Content St Rollox Railway Works, No 130 Springburn Road and Charles Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1856-7 by the Caledonian Railway, to build and maintain its locomotives and rolling stock. It was completely rebuilt in the 1880s to designs by Robert Dundas, engineer, under the direction of Dugald Drummond. This shows the south frontage of the carriage and wagon shops, which did not need to be as tall as the locomotive shops, as the vehicles being built and maintained did not require heavy lifting equipment. The St Rollox Works was one of the four large works which made Springburn world-renowned as a centre of locomotive building, but it also turned out large numbers of carriages and wagons of the highest quality, and maintained them.
