Scope and Content Harland & Wolff's Govan Shipyard, Clydebrae Street, Govan Road and Water Row, Glasgow This yard occupied the site of three smaller yards, including two which had belonged to Robert Napier. Harland & Wolff of Belfast purchased the site in 1912, and laid out a new yard. This was the first part of the firm's expansion on the River Clyde. This shows the river frontage of the building berths, which, unusually, had gates to keep the bottom of the berths dry. At the end is a ship being repaired in the former fitting-out basin, with a steel-framed shed retained to support the repairing business. The yard closed in 1963, and the main Govan Road building and berths were cleared in 1965. This shed was demolished in the early 1970s and housing has now been built on the site. The berth gates have been retained as features of a riverside walk. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
