Glenlochar Bridge View

SC 602352

Description Glenlochar Bridge View

Date 1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 602352

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glenlochar Bridge, Glenlochar, Dumfries & Galloway This is a six-span bridge over the River Ken, built in about 1790. It has a level roadway, segmental arches, and lightening holes in the spandrels above the piers, an unusual feature at that late date. This shows the bridge from the east. Note the relatively slender piers and rounded cutwaters, evidence of French influence on bridge design, as is the level roadway. This bridge was probably built to replace a ford across the River Ken at a time when agricultural improvement was stimulating the increasing use of wheeled vehicles. It is still in use for local traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
