Scope and Content Galloway Engineering Co's Works, Tongland, Dumfries & Galloway This works was built in 1916-19 for the manufacture of aero-engines for the war effort. The Galloway Engineering Co was effectively a subsidiary of the Arrol-Johnston Car Co, and it was lack of capacity at the latter's' Dumfries factory that resulted in the building of the Tongland works. This shows the works from the south-east. The reinforced concrete construction, with large glazed panels, was similar to that of the Arrol-Johnston works, and was based on American practice. The light components of aero-engines were suitable for manufacture in multi-storeyed buildings. The works was not completed in time to go into full production during World War I, and existing contracts were cancelled when the war ended. The factory was used at first to make aero-engines for civil use, then adapted, briefly, for motor-car manufacture. It is now a store, with windows bricked up. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
