Tongland Bridge General view

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 602339

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tongland Bridge, Tongland, Dumfries & Galloway This bridge was built for coach traffic, to supplant an old, narrow bridge with difficult approaches. It spans the River Dee where it passes through a narrow gorge. The engineering design is by Thomas Telford, but Alexander Nasmyth gave advice on the aesthetic treatment. This shows the bridge from the south-east, with its large central segmental span flanked at each end by groups of three Gothic-arched flood-relief spans. As can be seen by the seaweed on the lower part of the main arch the River Dee is tidal at this point. Nasmyth was probably responsible for the castellated treatment, including the bull-nosed masonry, and for the Gothic arches. The medieval-style features disguise an advanced structure, with the roadway carried on internal spine walls, the first use of this technique in Britain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
