Scope and Content Castle Douglas Gas Works, Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway This was a fairly typical small-town gas works using horizontal retorts to make coal gas. It was founded in 1843, and retained some early features, its final condition being the result of piecemeal alteration. This shows the tar tank, unusually in an elevated position. Behind the tank are the condensers, which cool the gas coming from the retorts and remove tar and ammoniacal liquor. Behind the condensers is the roof of the retort house. Coal gas manufacture was to a large extent phased out in the 1960s, partly, as here, by the construction of a gas grid which allowed a few large works to supply a large area. This works had closed earlier in 1967, and was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
