Scope and Content Old Bridge, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This bridge was originally built in about 1430-2, and has been repaired on many occasions. The eastern half was rebuilt in 1620, after a collapse, and three of the 1620 spans were demolished in 1794, after most traffic had been diverted to the New Bridge, opened in the previous year. This shows the bridge from the south. The three arches on the left are part of the original structure. The central pier originally supported an arch over the carriageway. At the left end is the former toll-house. This bridge is now a footbridge, and the toll-house at the west end is a museum. It is also known as Dervorguilla's Bridge, after the mother of John Balliol and founder of Sweetheart Abbey, who may well have endowed an earlier bridge on this site.
