Scope and Content Angel Hotel, No 70 High Street, Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries & Galloway This hotel was built in about 1800 as part of the model cotton-spinning village of Gatehouse of Fleet, founded in 1784 by James Murray of Broughton and Cally. It was situated close to the main spinning mills. Gatehouse of Fleet was on the main route from Carlisle to Portpatrick, and on to Ireland. This shows the hotel from the north-west, with its regular pattern of windows, and its unusually low-pitched roof. The main street, and road, is on the left. It is typical in scale of a medium-sized, early 19th-century coaching inn. This hotel continued to serve local, and some tourist, trade until the 1990s, but has now been converted into flats. The construction of a by-pass in about 1990 presumably almost ended passing trade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
