Scope and Content Toll-house, Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries & Galloway This building was built in about 1823 as a toll-house, and was later extended to form a school. It is situated at the east end of the village of Gatehouse of Fleet, on what was formerly the main road from Carlisle to Stranraer and Portpatrick. This shows the toll-house from the south-east. The original part of the building is on the left; the round-ended bay on the right was added when it was converted into a school. The low-pitched roof and open eaves are typical of toll-house design. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were abolished in the late 1880s, but most toll-houses continued in use as dwelling houses, or, as here, were converted to other uses. This one has, since the 1960s, been used as an architect's house and office, and as a pottery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
