Scope and Content Dalmarnock Ironworks, No 85 Dunn Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1868 by William Arrol. His firm became one of the largest and most celebrated structural engineering contractors in the world, and the works was extended to occupy a correspondingly large area. This shows the block at the corner of Bernard Street and Dunn Street, built in 1889. Beyond it is a three-storeyed block built in 1871 as a shuttle factory, later incorporated in the Arrol works. Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd, and their associated company, Tancred, Arrol & Co, built the Forth Bridge, replacement Tay Bridge, the Tower Bridge in London, as well as many other bridges and factories.
